Manufactured homes, also known as mobile homes, often have a bad reputation. Major design improvements eliminate that misconception.
People visualize outdated metal trailers with the term mobile homes. However, today’s mobile homes are much different featuring; energy efficiency, open-floor plans, modern design materials and offering permanent living structures.
A history of how mobile homes became known as manufactured homes:
Mobile Homes Then
According to Bobvila.com, mobile homes or trailers previously were used for recreational purposes and vacation homes only. However, when The Depression hit, people lost their homes, packed up their belongings and moved into their trailer homes. Manufacturers noticed the trend of using trailers as full-time dwellings and made the most of the opportunity.
By the 50s & 60s, mobile home parks were appearing outside of towns across the country. In June of 1976, the term “mobile home” was officially replaced with “manufactured home.” This gave the homes a more positive name, as they became permanent dwellings for people. Manufactured homes became more impressive when it comes to the design and floor
plans. Guidelines and state construction codes also
changed for the better.
Manufactured Homes Now
Today, manufactured homes are nothing like the mobile homes visualized in the past. Modern designs include drywall throughout the homes, designer window treatments, updated flooring and cabinetry options, and much more. Once a home is built and delivered to the site, exterior enhancements such as stone skirting and the addition of a garage or landscaping make the home look like a site built stick home. People often can’t tell the difference between a stick built home and a manufactured or modular home any more! From start to finish, it takes 30 days for a manufactured home to transition from order placement to move-in ready. Manufactured homes are a great money saving option for everyday homes or lake home options.
